After Saturday’s upset victory against then-No. 1 Oklahoma, the LSU gymnastics team moves atop national rankings for the seventh time in program history, RoadtoNationals.com announced on Monday.
LSU’s score of 196.950 on Saturday bumped the Tigers five spots to the top-seed, alongside Michigan with an identical season average after competing in two meets.
As on Monday, LSU sits in the top-five nationally on three of four events: first in vault with a team-average of 49.250, third on balance beam at 49.250 and tied for second on floor with a 49.475. The Tigers sit in a tie for 17th on the uneven bars at 48.975.
In the first half of the season, national rankings are based on a team’s overall season average for the first few weeks of the season before switching to the regional qualifying score.
The Tigers sit alongside their SEC counterparts No. 3 Florida, No. 6 Alabama and tied-No. 7 Auburn, inside the top-10.
Breaux said she hopes the the Tigers use their new seat in the poll, along with Saturday’s victory, as a learning experience for her team throughout the five-to-six month season.
“We hope it was a learning experience we can use before we get into our SEC opponents,” Breaux said. “I hope it helps down the road. We were very pleased with what we saw on the floor.”
