The LSU swimming and diving teams were unable to overcome Texas A&M in the final home meet of the season.
The No. 19 LSU Lady Tigers (9-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) fell to the No. 6 Aggies (7-2, 1-2 SEC) in their first loss of the season by a score of 119-181.
The Lady Tigers started off the race with a win in the first event, the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.99 and ended with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:21.47.
“On the women’s side, we came out of the gun really hot winning the relay,” said swimming coach Dave Geyer. “I think that woke their women up a good bit. I really liked how we stayed focus throughout that whole meet and we finished off with the women winning that relay and the men winning the relay at the end, too.
The Lady Tigers finished second, third and fourth in both the one-meter dive and the three-meter dive. Freshman Lizzie Cui finished second in the one-meter and third in the three-meter. Senior Cassie Weil finished second in the three-meter and third in the one-meter while senior Allie Alter finished fourth in both.
It was the first meet for Cui, who said she was disappointed that she will not have another home meet with the seniors.
“It is really sad,” Cui said. “Cassie and Allie were one of the main reasons that I decided to come to LSU.”
Junior Leah Troskot, who was on both relay teams, also finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.20) and 100-yard freestyle (50.45).
Junior Kara Kopcso, who was selected as SEC Swimmer of the Week on , was on the 200-yard medley relay team and finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (53.81) and 200-yard butterfly (1:57.07) and third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.18).
The No. 22 men’s team (1-6, 0-3 SEC) was edged out by the Aggies (6-1, 2-1 SEC) in a 141.5-158.5 defeat.
“We raced well,” Geyer said. “I knew coming into on the men’s side that it was going to come down to some close races and some close finishes, and you look at the results and the end of the meet came down to probably less than two seconds.”
The Tigers’ “A” team finished second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:28.95 to start the meet, but were able to finish with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:59.65.
Senior Alex Linge, who was on both relay teams, finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (44.29) and second in the 50-yard freestyle (20.44).
Junior Logan Rysemus finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (47.88) and second in the 50-yard butterfly (48.13). Rysemus was also on both relay teams.
Diving coach Doug Shaffer said that the team needs to keep getting better for the SEC championship in February.
“We are not going to peak yet, which is my expectation,” Shaffer said. “Our expectation is to peak a little bit later down the road.”
