The LSU women’s tennis team looks to continue Southeastern Conference play this weekend with a pair of matches against No. 3 Georgia and No. 23 Tennessee.
The Lady Tigers square off against Georgia (9-1, 2-0 SEC) Friday at 4 p.m. and Tennessee Sunday at 1 p.m.
LSU (7-3, 1-1 SEC) is playing a top 3 team for the second consecutive weekend.
The Lady Tigers lost to No. 2 Florida 7-0 last Friday and turned Sunday to defeat South Carolina 4-3.
It was LSU’s first win against South Carolina since 1985, which also is the year the Lady Tigers last defeated Georgia.
Georgia’s only loss of the season came at the hands of No. 1 Stanford at the National Team Indoor Championships.
“Georgia is a very good team and probably one of the most experienced,” said LSU coach Tony Minnis. “We have a really good shot to go out there and beat a really solid team.”
Georgia leads the all-time series against LSU 25-1. In the last meeting between the two teams in Athens in 2004, Georgia swept LSU 7-0.
Staten Spencer leads LSU in singles play.
Despite losing her first match of the season against Florida, she improved to 9-1 on the season with a win against South Carolina last weekend.
Georgia is led by two ranked sophomores, No. 4 Shadisha Robinson and No. 26 Natalie Frazier.
The LSU men’s tennis team hits the road for the second consecutive weekend for a pair of SEC matches.
LSU (10-3, 0-2 SEC) dropped to No. 17 in the national rankings this week after losing 5-2 at Florida and 4-3 at South Carolina last weekend.
The Tigers get a chance to redeem themselves Friday against Georgia at 1:30 p.m.
“We’re looking for every player to play up to their potential and play with enthusiasm,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown. “If everyone fights, we could be in every match, and we can win our fair share.”
But the Bulldogs have won 19 consecutive home matches, a streak that dates back to February of 2004.
The battleground in the match-up may be the doubles point. Georgia has not lost a doubles point in four consecutive matches, and the Tigers have not lost a doubles point since last month at the National Team Indoor Championships.
In addition, both squads boast heralded doubles teams. LSU’s No. 6 Mark Growcott and Ken Skupski will square off against Georgia’s No. 3 duo of Josh Isner and Antonio Ruiz.
The Tigers conclude the weekend at No. 21 Tennessee Sunday.
