The LSU women’s basketball team will look to continue its Southeastern Conference dominance this Sunday when the Lady Tigers (18-1, 5-0 SEC) take on Auburn at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
Last week’s victory at Vanderbilt marked LSU’s best conference start ever at 5-0.
The Lady Tigers are led by junior Seimone Augustus, who is averaging 20.0 points per contest.
Freshman Sylvia Fowles is coming off her best game as a Lady Tiger, scoring 22 points in last weekend’s victory.
Senior guard Temeka Johnson will look to move into sole possession of second place after her seven assists last weekend, which tied her with former Alabama guard Niesa Johnson at 800 career assists.
Auburn (10-8, 1-4 SEC) is coming off its first conference victory, winning 59-43 against in-state rival Alabama last Sunday. The win also marked Auburn’s first since Dec. 30.
Leading Auburn is junior center Marita Payne, who is currently on pace to break the SEC shot blocks record at 131.
After breaking her previous game record last weekend at Alabama with six blocks, Payne will now look to continue her dominance under the goal in hopes of breaking Heidi Gillingham’s 15-year-old record.
Averaging 4.7 blocks per game, Payne needs each remaining SEC game and one SEC Tournament game to break the record.
Despite being just one game ahead of last place South Carolina, Auburn boasts one of the top defenses in the conference, holding eight opponents to under 50 points.
Auburn also ranks third in scoring defense (56.4 ppg) and second in field goal percentage defense (.362).
Not to be out-done, LSU is ranked No. 1 in the SEC in scoring defense (51.4) and field goal percentage (.346).
Senior guard Natasha Brackett leads the Tigers of Auburn in points with 15.5 per game.
The Lady Tigers split last season’s two match-ups. They won the SEC opener in Baton Rouge but dropped the second game at Auburn 68-50.
While Auburn may hold the all-time series advantage at 26-9, LSU earned six victories in the last 10 games against Auburn.
