While most students are preparing for finals with a mix of hope, fear and anticipation, the first full semester of the Gieg-Downs administration is ending. With next semester coming fast upon us, it is best to review the successes and short comings of the current administration.
This semester, as we’ve noted, has been rather out of joint. No one would have imagined that Louisiana would have suffered two punishing hits by strong hurricanes – the damage of which laid bare the rotten foundations not just of our levy system but our dysfunctional state and local governments as well.
Our SG however, stood apart from the general chaos, doing their part to encourage peace, as well as supporting student volunteers and welcoming displaced students to campus. Their fund-raising helped put together millions of dollars in relief for the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and though we would expect any type of responsible administration to have done such things, we still congratulate them for it.
The administration has not been without fault, though. Early in the semester a carpool lot program was an unfortunate blunder, taking away important parking spaces and causing general confusion. Naturally, this early setback was obliterated by the hurricanes.
On a whole we believe SG has done their best. No government can be perfect, but the current administration has worked hard in trying times. For that, they deserve our gratitude and that of the student body.
