No. 23 Tigers finish fourth in Tuscaloosa
The 23rd-ranked LSU men’s golf team shot a final round, 3-over par 287 on Sunday at the Capstone Club to finish in fourth in the Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Tigers finished 16 strokes behind tournament champion Minnesota and were led by junior John Humphries, who finished 5-under par 208 in fourth place.
The fourth-place finish marks Humphries’ second straight top-ten finish this month and second this season.
Along with Humphries, LSU freshman Heath West continued his bid for Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year after finishing in 11th-place at even-par 213.
“We had a pretty good day today, but we still did not string enough low rounds together to have a shot to win,” said head coach Greg Jones. “We are still working on getting good numbers from all five guys in our line-up, but we had some real good scores here overall.”
Meanwhile, the LSU Lady Tigers, though vastly improving their score on the final day of competition at the Lady Gamecock Classic, still fell short while finishing in 12th-place in the final standings of the 54 hole tournament at South Carolina’s University Club.
The Lady Tigers, who shot rounds of 302-319-310 for a 54-hole total of 931, 67-over par, finished 57 strokes behind five-time winner Duke.
Senior Meredith Duncan finished strong for the Lady Tigers as she shot a final round of even-par 72 moving her into a group tied for 12th place at 7-over par 223 (74-77-72). The individual title eventually went to Duke’s Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh.
Duncan was accompanied with strong finishes as teammates Brooke Shelton shot a 76, Lindy Hitdlebaugh shot a 79 and Isabel Dornellas shot an 83.
The two teams will return to action this weekend as the Lady Tigers begin play in the Liz Murphey Classic this Friday, and the men begin play at the Schenkel/E Z-Go Invitational Saturday.
