Did the Union once sell beer?
In the 1970s, the legal drinking age in Louisiana was 18. At that time, the University Board of Supervisors allowed alcohol sales on campus. Both the Union and the Faculty Club applied for beer licenses and wine permits. The Tiger Lair and Tiger Pause gaming area both sold beer. In addition, a coffee bar located in the current food court area sold beer in the evenings and at night.
Tiger Lair and Tiger Pause discontinued beer sales in the 1990s; however, sales continued at the coffee bar location until 1997.
According to Shirley Plakidas, the Union beer sales never were a big revenue producer, mostly because of the Union’s “institutional environment.”
Why did the University take former Gov. Richard Leche’s name off the Old Law School Building?
According to the book, “Under Stately Oaks: A Pictorial History of LSU,” by Thomas Ruffin, Richard Leche took office as Louisiana governor in 1936. Under his administration, the state received substantial federal funds. He used much of it for a variety of campus building projects.
For his efforts, the University named the Old Law Building Leche Hall. However, after accusations of fraud arose, Leche became the first Louisiana governor to resign from office. After his conviction on fraud charges, the University removed his name from the Law School.
The University Board of Supervisors then adopted a policy stating the University could name no building for a person who has not been dead at least two years.
I’ve heard rumors of an underground pub near Tiger Stadium. Are they true?
There are no University records indicating any such pub existed. Instead, parts of the stadium were used as dormitories for male students. According to Facility Services, a small cafeteria near Gate 10 on the east side of the stadium sold snacks. However, this facility functioned more as a quick-stop mart instead of a pub or restaurant.
The gas station at Gardere/GSRI no longer will accept last-minute Entergy payments. The drop-off on Nicholson Drive also stopped. What are students’ other payment options?
An Entergy representative said the two gas stations have chosen no longer to accept payments. Several other nearby locations still accept payments, though.
The locations include Red and White Express Mart on Myrtle Street, Bet R Supermarket on Perkins Road, Hi Neighbors Supermarket on Jones Creek Road, Matherne’s Supermarkets on Highland Road and Bluebonnet Boulevard, Mr. Payroll, located inside Cracker Barrel/Texaco on Burbank Drive and S & P Food Store on Gardere Lane.
