Cannon booms, the sound of TAPS and military people from the past and present all will be on the Parade Ground this weekend.
The University is hosting its annual event, LSU Salutes, to commemorate veterans and students who currently are serving in the armed forces.
General William Sherman nicknamed the University “Ole War Skule” because until 1969, ROTC was mandatory for all entering freshman.
“LSU has a strong military history and heritage, and this is an annual salute to welcome back the veterans,” said Associate Dean of Students Randy Gurie.
The event will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on the Parade Ground.
The ceremony will include speeches by a retired major general and Chancellor Mark Emmert, said ROTC student Michael Schena.
There also will be a parade and a Hall of Honor induction, which consists of placing a wreath by the War Memorial to honor those who gave their lives for their country.
The annual event aims to remember those who served in the past and those who are serving now.
“[This is done] to make sure we never forget our history and heritage and honor those who currently serve,” Gurie said.
