The Power Drill: Around the sports world in a minute
Take me out to the ballgame
It just won’t be the same at 4 p.m. on Saturday when the LSU baseball team opens up the season in a warm-up game against a group of former Tigers.
Skip Bertman will be missed, not only by LSU fans and players, but by us in the media as well. Collegiate baseball never has been so impacted by one person’s ability to succeed on and off the field like the impact felt by Bertman’s career.
Smoke Laval takes over a team of potential superstars, as is the usual case for the LSU baseball team, but this season will have a different feel than others.
Regardless, it’s always nice to break out the sunflower seeds and spend a weekend at the ballpark, something I look forward to each and every year.
Ax coming down on Tide?
While Nick Saban and the LSU Tigers — along with most other college football programs — are focused on recruiting, the Alabama Crimson Tide is sitting idly with its fingers crossed.
After months filled with scandals, accusations and hearings, Alabama expects to learn of the fate of its football program later this week, and I truly hope that the NCAA sticks it to them.
It’s time for the NCAA to take a stand on this kind of behavior and make an example out of someone.
The NCAA Committee on Infractions is expected to announce its findings by Friday from a 1 1/2-year investigation that began in Spring 2000 into illegal recruiting practices by the Crimson Tide of Memphis high school star Albert Means.
Brady or Bledsoe?
One of the biggest stories out of New Orleans is the biggest Super Bowl question of all — Who will be the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots? Drew Bledsoe or the injured Tom Brady?
Trust me, don’t get caught up in the talk. St. Louis will win the game and win big.
My prediction: 41-21.
Did you know?
Nearly a month after the Tigers Sugar Bowl victory, Nick Saban has still not signed a contract extension with LSU that would boost his salary to $1.6 million per year. Hmmm …
