The stars were out Sunday night at the 59th annual Golden Globe Awards and anyone who was waiting for a show-stopping ball gown can stop waiting now. There weren’t any.
Doesn’t anyone try anymore? Usually, Hollywood can rely on one rogue spirit, one brave soul to send everyone buzzing about, asking one another if they’ve seen her. Everyone remembers clearly J. Lo’s Versace frock from the Oscars last year.
Even Toni Braxton’s white hand-towel drape from last year’s Grammy’s was enough to send Joan Rivers into a hissy fit of fashion praise. Braxton’s bravery made us all wonder how she fit all those guts into that tiny frame.
But, the risk-takers were few and far between at the Golden Globes this year. Most celebrities avoided outright disgrace, but none stood head-and-strapless shoulders above the rest.
Speaking of outright disgrace, Sela Ward somehow managed to look unattractive in her fuchsia rig by Valentino. Intended or not, Ward’s midriff was visible through the holes the dress apparently received in a meat-grinder.
“Vanilla Sky” star Cam Diaz also had a lapse in her better fashion judgment. She arrived wearing a pink-and-blue striped sundress with a brown blazer over it. The outfit may have worked at Cannes, but Diaz looked severely underdressed at the black-tie Globes.
Diaz’s “A Life Less Ordinary” costar Ewan McGregor showed up wearing a tuxedo, but the tuxedo wasn’t what caught anyone’s eye. The young Obi Wan turned more heads with his Liza Minelli-inspired eyeliner than anything else.
“Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker, who won a trophy for best actress in a comedy, also won a spot on the night’s worst-dressed list. Parker looked like a scary prom date with a flower tucked into her yellow hair and a black ball-gown with sequin pants that somehow made her itsy body look fat. Carrie would’ve worn a little color.
Fellow winner Nicole Kidman confirmed the black trend with a tight strapless number that looked great. Kidman finally looked natural without her tiny ex Tom Cruise hanging from her arm. The Aussie may have been one of the night’s best dressed if not for her black choker that looked like it was actually choking her.
Kudos to Kate Hudson for taking the plunge. The star of “Almost Famous” looked incredible in a long-sleeve creation with a neck line that plummeted down to her waste. She has set the tone for a very stylish career. A beautiful rising star and the evenings best-dressed, Kate Hudson isn’t almost famous anymore.
