The Freedom Forum will present its Journalism Administrator of the Year award for 2003 to the dean of the Manship School of Mass Communication, Jack Hamilton.
The award, which recognizes “leadership in advancement of journalism education,” will be presented Dec. 7 at the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication’s annual meeting in Palo Alto, Calif.
“The only realistic way to see it is to recognize it as an award for the school. Deans are only recognized when their faculty and students are good,” Hamilton said. “The school is doing great. The issue is not about me. It’s about how well the school is doing.”
Hamilton and the University both will receive $10,000 grants as a part of the award. Hamilton will give his portion of the award back to the school.
“I think the school is great,” said Nicole Howell, a mass communication sophomore. “Obviously, [Hamilton] has a lot to do with how well the students and faculty are doing.”
Hamilton came to the Manship School in 1992 and has written for The Milwaukee Journal, People, The New York Times Magazine and The Christian Science Monitor.
“Being good means change,” Hamilton said. “The school has a lot of energy because we have good faculty. All that helps to elevate the status of the school.”
