In conjunction with National Women’s History Month, the LSU Women’s Center will sponsor the 10th Annual Women in the Arts program, a showcase featuring women’s talent and creativity.
Women Organizing Women, a feminist student organization, will co-host the free event at the African American Cultural Center on Raphael Semmes Road on Friday at 7 p.m.
“Attendees can expect a mixed line-up of poetry, spoken word, song, dance, film and even radical cheerleading,” said Sara Gore, co-chair of WOW. “Radical cheerleading turns cheerleading into a feminist art by mixing traditional chants with a political agenda.”
Earlier this month, there was a visual art opening for women artists at the Women’s Center and Friday will be the last day to see the works.
“The art is still on display at the Women’s Center, so attendees will be able to see it at the reception,” Gore said. “There’s jewelry, knitting, painting, sculpture, dresses, drawings, paper cutting and photography. It’s really diverse.”
Amber Vlasnik, manager of the Women’s Center, said every year the program is a huge success, garnering standing room only audiences.
“I’ve never actually seen the Women in the Arts because this is my first year here,” Vlasnik said. “So, I’m really excited. The idea behind it is that we’re celebrating women’s artwork and woman-influenced art.”
She said the show is not limited to women, as there are men who work at the Women’s Center, and men will be performing in the show.
“Not all the work is by women or students, but it is all women-focused,” Gore said.
The Women in the Arts program will be held Friday night at the African American Cultural Center at 7 p.m. Following the event, there will be a reception at the Women’s Center with complementary catering and refreshments provided by Chartwells.
