Phi Mu Sorority hosted its 5th annual “Man of the Year” contest Thursday night in the Union theater.
University students crowded into the theater to see Beau Moss win the title of Phi Mu’s 2004 “Man of the Year.”
Every year, Phi Mu hosts the contest to raise money for Our Lady of Our Lake Regional Medical Center’s Children’s Miracle Network.
According to the “Man of the Year” program, Phi Mu has raised more than $5 million for Children’s Miracle Network since 1986.
Joy Scheyd, Phi Mu’s “Man of the Year” chairman, said the sorority raised more than $20,000 in 2003. The sorority is expecting to do the same this year.
The contest started with a dance number performed by members of Phi Mu, as the male contestants lined up behind the ladies.
Contestants had the opportunity to “strut their stuff” in a talent show and danced to the Village People’s “Macho Man” at the end of the night.
Joe Barber, the emcee, told the audience all the proceeds from Thursday’s night event went to Children’s Miracle Network.
Audience members also had the opportunity to add more money to jars for each contestant. The contestant with the most money won Phi Mu’s “people’s choice award.”
Scott Sutton, a Pi Kappa Phi fraternity member and 2003 “Man of the Year” runner-up, swayed the audience with his performance as the phantom from the “Phantom of the Opera.” Sutton dressed as the phantom and sang “Music of the Night.”
Michael Quint molded a pot as romantic music played in the background. At the end of his performance, he placed a single red rose inside the ceramic pot.
Contestant Juan Nogueria, who won the 2nd runner-up, ran from the stage crying after singing a love song — only to return dressed as Ariel, Disney’s Little Mermaid, in a sparkling halter top, dazzling green skirt and wild red wig.
The crowd screamed as he sang a song from the Disney movie.
Megan Harney, Phi Mu’s “Man of the Year” prize chairman, said she thinks the contest is a great cause and the sorority appreciated the contestants.
Other winners included Aaron Johnson for the People’s Choice Award and Robbie Walsh as the 1st runner-up.
