LSU Student Senator Heath Hattaway resigned from his position of representing the University Center for Advising and Counseling Wednesday during the Senate’s meeting.
His resignation comes after being charged with under-aged driving while intoxicated, disobeying a red light and not having proof of insurance, according to a LSUPD police report.
According to the Student Organization Handbook, students “must be in good standing with the University, have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and not on disciplinary or deferred suspension” to be eligible for, elected to, appointed to or hold office in any registered student organization.
They also must have full-time status and meet all standards established by the student organization and the organization’s constitution or bylaws.
On Feb. 5, an officer on Highland Road near Raphael Semmes Road observed a vehicle disregarding a red light at the intersection of Highland Road and Dalrymple Drive.
Police said an officer stopped the vehicle on Highland Road after he observed it “fishtail” and temporarily lose control while making a turn.
The officer arrested Hattaway after he smelled an alcoholic odor on his breath and for failure to provide proof of insurance for his vehicle.
Hattaway performed poorly on a field sobriety test and was taken to LSUPD headquarters, were he refused to take a breathalyzer test. He then was booked in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Hattaway said in an e-mail that he resigned during the Senate meeting because it was the “appropriate time and place to do so.”
“The manner in which I resigned is reflective of my character, beliefs and style,” he said in the e-mail.
Hattaway said he will continue to attend Senate meetings and will be eligible to hold office again next fall.
