The stress of finding a job after graduation is weighing down on many students as the spring semester progresses.
In order to help students in their job search, Career Services is hosting its semi-annual LSU Career Day Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the PMAC.
“Employers come to meet students that they will pre-select and then later select for on-campus interviews.” said Mary Belleau, assistant director of LSU Career Services.
Students have the opportunity to introduce themselves and sell themselves to employers, Belleau said. This is a great chance for students, as well as alumni, to interact with recruiters, make a good first impression, give out resumes, learn more about the employers and seek for career options.
Therefore, career day is “a win-win situation for both employer and student,” she said.
If a student impressed an employer at Career Day, then the employer is more likely to invite the student to an interview if they meet the qualifications after receiving his or her resume.
Although Career Day is being held in February, Gov. Kathleen Blanco has declared March as “Career Month” in Louisiana.
Along with Blanco, LSU Career Services will again assist in establishing a partnership between employers and educators across the state.
Belleau stressed that Career Day is not just for seniors. She said the number one thing employers look for on a resume is job-related experience in the student’s major. It is important for sophomores and juniors to gain experience in their area of study so that by the time they are a senior, they will be more competitive in the job market.
According to Belleau, this is the largest number of participants (133), in terms of employers and grad schools, for spring career day. She said that this speaks very highly of University students since these people are willing to spend their time and money to come.
In a recent LSU press release, Belleau said she estimates that those entering the workplace will work an average of eight to 10 jobs over the course of their working lives.
Students of all majors are encouraged to take this opportunity to develop contacts. The event is free and open to the public. Dress is business casual.
