The Saints’ big win over the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend brought shock to the majority of New Orleans’ fans — but not this one.
It is that time in every NFL season when the New Orleans Saints pull out a victory over a prominent team and with the drop of a hat the diehard fans are talking playoffs and the craziest ones are looking for Super Bowl tickets.
Come on guys, it’s the same story every year. What is going to make a difference this year? This team still has the same coach, same quarterback and same showboat players.
Jim Haslett, what have you done for me lately?
Haslett was named Coach of the Year in 2000 and since then has not achieved anything except pursuing Saintsations — or so rumor has it. But who listens to rumors?
Then there is the second most important person who has the potential to make big plays — quarterback Aaron Brooks. Has anyone seen this guy do anything remarkable under pressure? I don’t think so. He chokes. If you put him in a blow-out situation he’s unbelievable, but when it comes to crunch time — he folds.
Have you ever seen a championship team dance around in the endzone? I have yet to see a New England Patriot player break into a dance he choreographed in front of a mirror — probably naked — an hour before game time. That’s because its winning streak and championship rings are impressive enough.
The Saints have to do something else to keep its fans from falling asleep in the Superdome.
Enter Joe Horn. I hate showboats, but I do love this guy. I guess because he keeps me laughing when I want to cry after a ridiculous Saints loss. Cell phones, dances and the most recent incident — hugging the goal post, have become the highlights of Saints games for me. But Joe, at the end of the day where’s our Superbowl? Where are our playoff victories? Heck, where is our playoff berth?
What is a girl to do? It is double the pain for me. One, because as an avid sports fan I buy into the hopes and think “this is the year”. But, I keep in the back of my mind that I will be brought back down to Earth before the season is over and left to rebuild my hopes for the next season.
At least I have knowledge of reality. When it comes to my guy friends, their hopes are too high to listen to the warning signs I scream at them every season. After a Sunday loss, I steer clear of the boys. Granted I do warn them not to get too excited just yet, I will be the target person they take their frustration out on.
That is why I have taken time out to publicly warn those jumping the gun along with all the other Saints fans that this is just another year to be let down. When the Saints leave you crying, I do not want anything taken out on me. Go find Haslett — he’ll probably be on the streets after this season any way.
N.O. disappoints often
