Some intense rivalry games don the schedule this week, with someteams looking to overcome their nemeses, while others try to finishthe year out with a little dignity. After looking foolish on abunch of upset calls that never happened, I’ll do my ownversion of Ron Zook and stay quiet the rest of the season. On tothe games:
Last week: 3-2 straight up, 2-3 vs. spread. Season: 40-15straight up, 18-27 vs. spread
No. 2 Oklahoma (-12) at No. 20 Oklahoma State, 11 a.m., ABC— They call this rivalry “Bedlam” for a reason.OSU has a history of thumping the Sooners while they’re on agood run as they did in 2001 and 2002. But quarterback Jason Whiteand tailback Adrian Peterson are too dominant and should put upmore than respectable numbers against a team that barely beatMissouri last week.
Prediction: Oklahoma 34, Oklahoma State 17
No. 7 California (-15.5) vs. No. 20 Arizona State, 9 p.m., TBS— The Sun Devils have the worst pass defense in the Pac-10.Cal has arguably the second best quarterback in the conference inAaron Rodgers. Plug those two factors in and you get a high-scoringshootout. Rodgers leads the country in pass efficiency andhe’ll add about four touchdowns to his total this week. USCthroughly embarrassed Arizona State and Cal will give a similarperformance
California 41, Arizona State 20
No. 10 Georgia (-7) vs. Florida at Jacksonville, Fla., 2:30p.m., CBS — It all seems to be falling into place for theBulldogs. They’re ready to get the monkey of losing 12 of thelast 13 to the Gators, right? Ron Zook will be a lame duck on thesidelines, literally, but he’s known for getting teams up forbig games like this. All the emotion surrounding that could be goodfor a Florida team that’s struggled, but I think it’sgoing to hurt the players’ focus. The game will ultimatelycome down to turnovers. If Florida can win the field positionbattle and Chris Leak finds his receivers, they’ll go homewinners. But the Gators have yet to have a flawless performance allyear. History suggests that Georgia will find a way to lose thisone and blow the small chance they have at a national title. But ifthe Red Sox can defy the sports gods and win the World Series afteran 86-year drought, why can’t an under-achieving team fromAthens, Ga. beat a team waiting for Steve Spurrier to come backhome?
Georgia 21, Florida 17
Hawaii (+22) at No. 18 Boise State, 7 p.m., ESPN2 — A goodmatch-up of two great offenses. Boise comes in averaging 44 pointsa game. Hawaii puts up 347 yards in the air per game and UH’sTimmy Chang is set to become the all-time NCAA passing leader. Heneeds 241 yards to pass Ty Detmer’s 15,031 career yards. Theonly other interesting plot line here is the Warriors could spoilthe Broncos’ run at an undefeated season. So if you’renot in the mood for watching defense, turn it to the Deuce andwatch these teams slug it out. It should be worth it.
Boise 48, Hawaii 45
Vanderbilt (+24) at No. 19 LSU, 7 p.m., Tigervision —After last week’s close win against Troy, Vandy is now acrap-shoot for the Tigers. OK, so the Commodores won’t comein and blow the West Side renovation off Tiger Stadium, but LSUmust play better on offense or Jay Cutler and crew will keep itinteresting. If the Tigers cut down on turnovers, expect the gameto go as planned with LSU pulling away shortly after halftime.
LSU 35, Vandy 7
