LSU added another top committment to its recruiting class Sunday with the verbal committment of Melbourne, Fla. wide receiver Xavier Carter.
Carter is LSU’s 22nd committment for the 2004 class, which currently is ranked second behind USC in various recruiting circles.
Carter chose the Tigers over Florida and Miami.
Rivals.com, a national recruiting Web site, ranks Carter as the No. 5 wide receiver, No. 22 in its Rivals100 for 2004.
ESPN.com recruiting ranks Carter as the No. 6 prospect in its Top 100.
ESPN recruiting expert Tom Lemming compared Carter to Minnesota wideout Randy Moss.
“[Carter is] a sensational athlete with exceptional body control and leaping ability,” Lemming said in his Top 100 evaluation. “Carter averaged well over 20 yards per catch this season proving to be a difference maker and the type of offensive weapon that every major school is looking for.”
Carter, a 6-foot-3 195 pound Rivals five-star receiver, earned honorable mention 4A All-State honors as a junior, despite catching 28 passes for 820 yards and 12 touchdowns.
As a senior at Palm Bay High School, Carter returned three punts for touchdowns and one kickoff.
Carter also played defense, returning two interceptions for touchdowns.
