The University honored the graduating class of Spring 2004 at the PMAC today, receiving parting words from the President of the United States.
President George W. Bush delivered the commencement address to 3,162 new graduates as part of a campaign trip in preparation for the November presidential election. Bush moved on to New Orleans later today for a private fundraiser.
“After four years of sitting through lectures, I doubt that you want to hear another one,” Bush said in his speech. “You’ve earned your degrees.”
Bush offered the graduates three statements of advice to have a successful future.
“Be on time,” he said. “Choose your company carefully. Listen to your mother. When I paid attention, I benefitted. When I didn’t, I paid the price.”
Bush also urged the graduates to keep morality in mind in all their future endeavors.
“Good lives are also constructed on moral conviction,” Bush said. “I hope you will always strive to be men and women of conviction.”
He went on to point out similarities between living a moral life and the country’s current objectives abroad.
“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give,” Bush said. “One of the finest ways to show gratitude for freedom is to protect freedom. We will never abandon our belief that freedom is a gift from the Almighty to all people in the world. Americans are not the running kind. When we make a commitment, we see it through.”
In addition to delivering the commencement address, Bush also received an honorary doctorate of science from the University.
“This University is pleased to honor you,” said LSU system President William Jenkins.
To conclude his address, Bush reflected on his time in office and the new University graduates.
“As President, I’ve had the privilege to see another generation of Americans rise up and handle their responsibilities,” Bush said. “Today, I am proud of your accomplishments. God bless you.”
