After LSU’s seventh practice of fall camp, defensive coordinator Blake Baker spoke to the media about the progress of this year’s defense.
Overall, Baker believes the guys have significantly improved from last year and even since the spring, but they still have a long ways to go.
“We got to get more consistency,” Baker said. “When we play it right, we’re pretty good. When we don’t, we got to get it on the ground from the secondary. Again, looking for more improvement.”
“We have a recovery day, then we go six days straight. I think the cream will start rising to the crop.”
Coach Baker also talked about the identity of the Tiger defense. They have good speed and physicality, but their tackling still needs work.
“Right now, I’ll be honest, we’re inconsistent,” Baker said. “I think we have all the pieces in place to have a good defense. What I want to see is a little more player-led accountability and guys just doing their job on a consistent basis.”
During practice Saturday, LSU’s offensive linemen bested the defense in the majority of the one-on-one drills.
Coach Baker spoke to how they pose a great challenge to his front seven and how they push them to be more aggressive and work harder.
“I do believe we have one of the bets if not the best offensive lines in the country,” Baker said. “It’s going to make us better and it gives us a fair evaluation.”
Sunday will be a rest day for the team, but they will be back at it again on Monday, August 12.
