Left-fielder and lead off batter Derek Curiel and pitcher Kade Anderson spoke to the media after beating Missouri in game one on Friday at 4:30 CST.
The team, Curiel especially, showed that this team is not reliant on the defense. Defensive players can lean on the offense to respond and dominate when defense may not be pulling the weight. The offense is very versatile and excels at working with what the opponent’s defense gives them.
“”We don’t live or die by the homerun,” Curiel said.
Throughout this first portion of the season, Curiel has proven to be a very consistent player. He tributes this to the mindset of being where your feet are, his love for LSU, and going pitch by pitch.
He was asked about the struggles of transitioning from playing highschool ball to college ball, and Curiel reminded the media that it is just baseball.
“You’re going to get humbled or you’re going to be great,” Curiel said.
After Curiel, Anderson spoke to the media. He also noted how impressive the offense looked during the game.
“It makes it easy when our team is scoring 12 runs,” Anderson said.
Anderson had quite a few mound meetings with Coach Nate Yeskie; one being as early as the second inning.
“He knows when he needs to come out there and help me relax,” Anderson said.
The lefty got rolling today and had to get told to slow down by the umpire.
“He comes out there to reset me,” Anderson said when asked what Yeskie said to him.
Anderson also thanked the fans for coming out and being so supportive.
“They (the fans) keep us energized,” Anderson said.
He does not believe the score would have been so high without their support.
