LSU Gymnasts Aleah Finnegan and Haleigh Bryant spoke to the media Monday afternoon to recap their team’s outstanding performance on the road against Auburn and their mindset heading into Birmingham as they compete for an SEC Championship.
Finnegan began by stating how she was pleased with her performance on Friday night after scoring a 9.975 on floor and how working on small mistakes has helped her confidence going into the SEC Championship.
“We (Jay Clark) had a conversation about it regarding kind of some tweaks and changes that were needing to be made inside the floor routine,” Finnegan said. “So to be able to go out there and hit for my team, it’s definitely something that I feel a lot better about going into these next few meets.”
Bryant would later chime into the conversation and speak highly of her teammate Kailin Chio, who scored her first 10.00 of her collegiate career on vault.
“It was absolutely amazing,” Bryant said. “She (Chio) knows what she needs and knows her process and just how inspiring that is that a freshman knows exactly what they need this early in their career. I’m just so proud of how hard she works.”
Since confidence has been a big factor for Finnegan and Bryant all season, they hope to continue building up the team’s overall confidence as they compete against power-house SEC teams like Oklahoma, Florida and Missouri.
“We’re going to go in Saturday competing for an SEC Championship,” Bryant said. “Everybody knows that, but not making the moment bigger than it needs to be by doing our normal gymnastics. It’s going to be who walks into that arena with the right mindset into doing their gymnastics.”
LSU continues to be impressive with their road win against Auburn, which was the third consecutive week that they scored over 198.000.
No. 2 LSU will head to Birmingham, Alabama for the SEC Championship and compete on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.
