The LSU Gymnastics team defeated the Auburn Tigers in the final meet of the regular season on Friday night with a final score of 198.200-197.550. The win secured them the title of SEC Regular Season Champions for the third time in program history.
The Tigers do share the title with the Oklahoma Sooners, who also earned a 7-1 conference record. Their one loss of the season was to LSU on February 14.
Head Coach Jay Clark expressed concerns that the team may struggle on the road, especially after their early loss to Arkansas. However, the Tigers have only improved as the season has progressed, scoring over a 198 within their last four meets.
The Tigers will be on the road again Saturday for SEC Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. As the No. 2 seed, they will face the one, three and four seeds which are Oklahoma, Florida and Missouri, respectively.
The 5-8 seeds, which are Kentucky, Georgia, Auburn and Alabama will compete at 2:30 p.m. CST while the 1-4 seeds will start at 7:00 p.m.
“There’s a lot of teams that are capable of winning it,” Coach Clark said. “It’s gonna come down to the mindset and who gets hot. So much of it this time of year can be momentum-driven, and when you catch momentum, you better try to hold on to it.”
The meet will take place at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham and can be viewed on SEC Network.
