There’s a historic rivalry when it comes to the LSU Tigers versus the Florida Gators, and it was evident in Sunday’s battle, where LSU gymnastics saw one of its best performances of the year.
A season-high road score of 198.325 wasn’t enough for the Tigers to walk away with the win in Gainesville, but it provided a few takeaways of the team’s competitiveness now in the final week of the regular season.
“We feel good,” head coach Jay Clark said. “We’d have loved to win it, but ultimately that doesn’t determine a whole lot. The score helps us, and we did a good job. It was by far the best meet we’ve had all year.”
One of the most notable takeaways in Sunday’s meet was the ability for LSU to salvage events and move on from errors.
As the evening started off with a mistake and a fall on bars in the first two routines of the meet, it was quickly turned around by the back half of the lineup that found three straight scores of 9.900 to keep the Tigers tied with the Gators at the end of Rotation 1.
Even more so, the team that saw one of its lowest scoring bar rotations of the year came back with a season-high vault score of 49.700 in the following event.
Resetting between events has been a focus for the Tigers throughout each week, with multiple occasions proving the value of this mindset. LSU’s ability to reclaim its first rotation and re-harness confidence in the second was exactly what gave it the lead by the halfway point of the meet.
“When you can go over there, compete hard, keep your cool like we did after initially having the mistake on bars and stay within two tenths of a team that is at or near your ability level on the road, in their arena, you know you’ve done a pretty good job,” Clark said.
Another key element of the impressive competition between both teams was LSU’s ability to ignore the opposing atmosphere and rely on team energy.
This has been another frequently mentioned topic by the team, and it played a large role in the team’s success on the road.
“This year we have a lot of personalities, and we like to have a lot of fun,” gymnast Tori Tatum said. “I think we do our best gymnastics when we’re having fun, so keeping that light environment is what’s key.”
Not only has LSU earned exceptional results without harnessing fan energy, but it’s also allowed them to set the tone for prospective success when it comes to postseason competition–something that doesn’t always have home crowd advantages.
Lastly, the Tigers continued to demonstrate the consistency that has defined their deeply competitive lineups.
Coming off a double-meet weekend leading into Sunday’s matchup, rest and recovery became an important factor for the coaching staff. With many gymnasts recording significant routines over the past several meets, facing yet another top-five opponent on the road was no easy feat.
Nonetheless, every gymnast that stepped onto the floor proved that no matter how big the challenge or how high the pressure, it was simply another routine to be performed with the same confidence and composure as any other day.
“I’ve just been very pleased and proud of the way that they handled three meets in nine days,” Clark said. “It feels like a good idea when you put it on the schedule, and then when it comes down to it, you get concerned about mental fatigue or potential for injury. But, we came through it, and we came through it unscathed.”
The composure displayed in competition mirrors the standard of excellence they maintain in the days leading up to each meet, highlighting how deeply the program values the power of consistency in every aspect of preparation and performance.
“The coaches preach that everyone’s role is valued here,” senior Chase Brock said. “Everybody, no matter if you’re a lowerclassman or upperclassman — everyone is a leader here. I think it’s cool that we have this opportunity to step into whatever role we’re given and how we go about it.”
Now down to its last competition before taking on the SEC championship, LSU will ride its wave of momentum back to the PMAC in hopes of capping off a remarkable season with a win against Arkansas.
