It was only a matter of time for Oklahoma to take the lead and the win, as LSU struggled on the offensive side of the ball.
The Sooners offense started strong, scoring in the top of the first. LSU responded quickly with a two-run home run struck by Omar Serna Jr. This came as no surprise to head coach Jay Johnson, who is expecting a lot from the freshman.
“Next most impactful player on the team right now outside of Jake Brown. Into the spring, I thought we gave him a good, responsible ramp to get him in the lineup, and he’s ready to go now,” said head coach Jay Johnson.
The Tigers would extend the lead to 3-1 thanks to Chris Stanfield, who scored a home run. The team couldn’t follow the momentum, as they had zero hits after.
The top of the eighth would result in a catastrophe for the Tigers, where pitchers Gavin Guidry and Devin Sheerin allowed three runs. The Sooners capitalized on a couple of errors by the LSU to take the lead and win.
Coach Jay Johnson is focusing on the team’s mental strength as they are going through an offensive slump.
“Maybe I am trying to build confidence in this group? Yeah, I am, and there are things that this group doesn’t do as well as that group clearly,” said Coach Johnson.
Senior outfielder Chris Stanfield is confident on the capacity of his team after losing three series in a row. “I don’t know; I really think we’re going to be fine. I guess it’s not as bad as it seems.”
Coach Johnson compared the Sooners to his squad in 2025. “They can win in a number of different ways. Their bullpen is very good, and so are their athleticism and defense. They are not reliant on the home run score. That was a staple of last year’s team here. So we’ve got to figure out a way to get back to that, which would be the nature of you know, moving some things around a bit.”
The focus of this team is being on the level that prior teams have shown. It won’t get any easier as they are facing two ranked SEC opponents. Kentucky in Lexington and Tennessee in Knoxville. Before they make the trip, they will face Louisiana Tech on Tuesday at Alex Box.
