The LSU men’s tennis team battled past the Georgia men’s tennis team in a dramatic 4-3 thriller amidst their SEC Tournament campaign, showcasing the grit that has defined the season, while punching the ticket to the SEC Tournament semifinals for the second time in three seasons.
LSU leaned on depth across its lineup, with several key contributors stepping up in pressure moments. Players such as Erik Arutiunian, Andrej Loncarevic and Olaf Pieczkowski have been fixtures in LSU’s singles and doubles rotation this season.
Experienced veterans like Matias Ponce De Leon and Alessio Vasquez provide stability in tight matches and a type of calm that only comes with experience. These contributors highlight the balanced roster LSU has relied on throughout the year.
But in the biggest moment, it was a freshman who stepped up.
It was Pieczkowski who had the most clutch moment of the match, scoring the final point in a back-and-forth battle with the No. 6 Bulldogs that sent the Tigers to the semifinals.
The match against Georgia reflected just that, balance and composure. After dropping the double point early, LSU relied on singles and responded with strong performances across all six courts.
The Tigers fought through long rallies and split sets, refusing to let Georgia pull away.
“If I’m being honest, I did not realize that we were losing 3-0,” head coach Danny Bryan said. “I was looking at a few courts and saw that we were winning, so I was calm. Then, when I saw I could clinch the match, I kept doing what I was doing, and it happened. We lost our last match to them, so we were hyped coming into today. Our mindset was only to win, so I am really happy I could do it and be a part of LSU history.”
With the overall points tied late into the match, LSU’s depth proved decisive as the Tigers secured the fourth and clinching point to complete the comeback 4-3 victory.
But the victory meant more than just advancing to the Tigers. This victory represented every hard-fought practice while proving everyone who questioned if this LSU team could ever get to this point wrong.
The win also carried added significance considering the stakes. LSU entered the SEC Tournament as a top seed after a historic regular season and advanced to the quarterfinals, setting up the showdown with Georgia, one of the teams that topped LSU in the regular season.
The tight contest validated LSU’s ability to perform in the postseason, where the pressure of going home looms over each match.
The result marks LSU’s second trip to the SEC semifinals in the last three seasons, reinforcing the program’s upward trajectory. The Tigers’ ability to win close matches highlights a team built on resilience.
With momentum and confidence growing, LSU heads into the semifinals on Saturday, battle-tested after another dramatic win.
