Bounce music has long been one of the signature styles of New Orleans culture, a form of dance music that takes getting loose to levels which might scare. For more than two decades, Dj Jubilee has been shaking booties around the country as the self-proclaimed ‘King of Bounce’. “Put your hands up and let me see how old you were in ’93,” shouted the king to his crowd, with most of the audience able to hold up their age on one hand. While his songs had been around longer than the people dancing, his signature hyped dance music translated remarkably well to a modern crowd.
Despite the name, DJ Jubilee was more of an MC than a DJ, with New Orleans’ DJ Quickiemart on the 1’s and 2’s. Simple instructional lyrics mixed with a fast, punchy beat to create the style of dance music which is bounce. The duo made a phenomenal demonstration of the similarities of old and new musical styling from the Big Easy. Both performers capably garnered a diverse crowd of dancers as people came to get funky on a Friday night.
While an accidental death the night before may have caused some worry, a solid crowd came out to bounce the night away in Baton Rouge. Both visually and physically some of the strangest stuff to behold, bounce night is a must for anyone who claims to be in touch with Louisiana culture.
