After one day of competition at the NCAA Zone “D” Diving Regionals, hosted at the CRWC Natatorium in Houston, Texas, LSU freshman diver Cassie Weil has punched her ticket to Indianapolis to compete at the NCAA Championships in the three-meter springboard event.
Weil’s score of 316.80 in the prelims combined with her final score of 345.90 totaled a mark of 662.70, which was good enough for third place overall and a spot at Nationals.
“Cassie solidified her spot to the NCAA Championships with a stellar performance on the three-meter,” said diving coach Doug Shaffer in a news release. “She struggled a bit in the prelims, but she never lost faith.”
Qualification for the NCAA Championships takes into account final places on the one-meter, three-meter and platform events.
Weil is one of seven women who will qualify for the NCAA Championships from Zone “D,” and after the first day of competition, only four women’s spots remain.
LSU sophomore Alex Bettridge finished in 13th place in the three-meter event with a total score of 573.75. Shaffer said the best could be yet to come with Bettridge since her strongest event, the one-meter, is slated to take place Wednesday for the women.
