LSU junior Ty Ross was one of 48 players named to the Johnny Bench Award watch list Monday, given annually to the nation’s top catcher.
Ross, who has started 14 of the Tigers’ first 16 games behind the plate, has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, while opponents have only stolen six bases in those 16 games.
Although he’s struggled at the plate to begin the season, hitting only .209, Ross launched his second home run of the season Sunday in a 7-5 win against Washington and has driven in eight runs thus far.
As a sophomore last season, Ross hit .292 while starting 54 games, keeping up his stout defense bend the plate with a .994 fielding percentage.
