After two years without releasing new solo material, Bey has finally dropped a new track, and I’m taking a moment to reassess. This is much different from anything Beyoncé made pre-motherhood. For one thing, the entire track is chopped and screwed, and she not only rap-sings, but sang opera soprano in some parts. I can’t see anyone but Beyoncé pulling this off live.
Queen B is all about girl power — has been since the Destiny’s Child days —but her new single (assumedly from her upcoming album), “Bow Down/I Been On.” is all about Me power. It’s a different approach, but not a jarring one. In fact, I was pretty much sold on the entire album based on the awesome self-celebration on this track.
Quote: “The capital B means I’m ‘bout that life.” What?! Yes.
Not surprisingly, Beyoncé is being slammed by other female singers refusing to bow. R&B singer Keyshia Cole showed that she is unimpressed by “Bow Down/I Been On” on Twitter, calling Bey “self-righteous.”
Twitter fans promptly reminded Cole how unimpressed the world is by her entire career.
Honestly, this track can be easy to hate. The chopped and screwed element will turn off plenty of fans, I’m sure. I can’t help but recall the initial reaction to Kanye West and Jay-Z’s now infamous single “H•A•M” in 2011. “Watch the Throne” wasn’t a twinkle in Roc-A-Fella’s eye, as far as the public as concerned, and fans didn’t know what to make of the strange first look into the collaboration.
“H•A•M,” which stands for “Hard as a Motherfucker,” has the same attitude and, strangely enough, random opera singing as “Bow Down/I Been On.” It wasn’t the most successful track of the album, but it definitely showed the world that Jay-Z and Kanye are not a duo to be messed with.
If the successes of later singles from “Watch the Throne” are any indication, we — meaning you, me, your friends, your mother, the president, the Queen of England, everyone — should brace ourselves for B’s upcoming album, rumored to be called “Mrs. Carter.” I predict that it’ll blow us all away.
