Some long-anticipated announcements occurred in the past two days…but it’s not what you think.
1. The next Xbox … will be revealed May 21
In an invitation to the media today, Microsoft announced it will reveal its next Xbox on May 21.
That’s it.
And yes, Microsoft revealing the next Xbox is such a huge deal it deserves its own post. But why, you might ask?
The year was 2005. Microsoft released the Xbox 360 a year before Nintendo and Sony released their respective consoles to much fanfare. As of 2012, the console has sold 70 million units worldwide and, at its peak, had an attach rate of more than seven games per console. For comparison, the Wii and PS3 had attach rates of around 3 games per console.
Fast forward to 2013: Nintendo launched the Wii U in late 2012, Sony had its PS4 reveal in February and Microsoft has been eerily silent leading up to E3 in June.
Until now that is.
Amid rumors of always-online connectivity, incompatibility with used games and an entertainment-hub focus, none of which have been particularly well-received, Microsoft is finally showing us its next console.
2. WWDC is June 10
Apple’s immensely popular World Wide Developers Conference will be held in early June, and new versions of iOS and OS X will be shown to debs, according to Senior Vice President Phil Schiller.
That was announced during the Cupertino-based company’s second-quarter earnings call, where it posted a profit of $9.5 billion on revenues of $43,6 billion, an 18 percent decrease from Q1.
Apple CEO Tim Cook also teased a “new product category” to be revealed soon which could be anything from the Apple TV to the iWatch.
Personally, I hope it’s something people will actually care about.
