I’m infatuated with female vocalists, love sound tracks and am convinced I was meant to be born in the 1920’s.
Given this information one can imagine my excitement when I heard that my biggest lady crush, Florence Welch, would be featured on the soundtrack for this summer’s much anticipated film “The Great Gatsby.”
Though the album will not be released in its entirety until Tuesday May 7th, with the movie premiering the following Friday, Florence + the Machine’s song “Over the Love” has been leaked all over the Internet, and gee is it swell.

The band’s official Twitter account tweeted samplers of the song and album late last Wednesday night (American time), and by the next morning Soundcloud had released a stream of the entire track. GQ magazine quickly linked the stream to a short review, which was tweeted by next day.

The song is classic Florence, with robust vocals and a dark feeling, likening it to her most recent work on “Ceremonials” and the single” Breath of Life” off the soundtrack for last year’s “Snow White and the Huntsman.” If you love Flo, you will love this song.
It starts of slow and sad and then builds into an intense experience with palatable raw emotion, representative of the themes in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. As she belts the lyrics “cry and cry and cry” repeatedly throughout the song in her distinctive vibrato voice, she is able to translate the pain of the love- torn flapper Daisy Buchanan.
It seems this one song gets across the subtle sadness that looms behind the entire story.
Even if you haven’t read the book or seen the earlier film, the song is powerful enough that I suspect listeners will fall in love with it nevertheless.
So get your kale ready and put on your best get up! Our favorite doll, Florence, has done has done it again!
And be on the look out for the release of the full soundtrack on May 10th. It should be wild fun, including artists such as Jack White, Lana Del Rey, The xx, Emeli Sande, Goyte and BEYONCE!
