LSU Baseball Head Coach Jay Johnson spoke to the media following his team’s hard-fought 10-6 win over Little Rock to win the 2025 Baton Rouge Regional.
Monday’s win didn’t come easy for the Tigers, after going down 5-1 after two innings, LSU would turn to true freshman Casan Evans looking to hold down what seemed to be an unstoppable offense.
Evans would deliver a career performance, tossing six full innings of relief and striking out nine hitters in a row on his way to a career-best 12 punchouts.
“This dude is a superstar,” Johnson said postgame while pointing at Evans. “And you guys have been around a lot longer than I have, but there haven’t been very many better performances on that pitching mound in championship games than what you saw from Casan.”
Evans’s performance allowed the LSU offense to take their swings and look to get back in the game, and the Tigers would find big swings all night from Designated Hitter Ethan Frey.
The Louisiana native went 4-5 at the plate with 4 RBI, including a bases clearing double to bring LSU within a run.
“You look at the offensive performance by Ethan, that’s arguably the best game I’ve ever seen any one of my players ever play, considering the situation,” Johnson said of the Rosepine native.
Frey wasn’t the only Tiger to have a big day at the dish, as Catcher Luis Hernandez delivered two home runs, his second to tie the game for LSU.
“Luis, clutch. I mean, absolutely clutch. Sometimes you look a player in the eye in the on-deck circle and you think this is about to be good.” Johnson said of his Catcher.
LSU now looks ahead to the 17th Super Regional in program history, as they’ll take on the Clemson Regional Champions, West Virginia.
