By adopting a “for the fans, by the fans” attitude, indie game developers Dark Seas Games, the sister studio to the Baton Rouge-based Pixel Dash Studios, are working to create a new game called “Road Redemption.” The game is intended to be a throwback to the popular ’90s game “Road Rash.”
Jumping on the popular trend of crowd funding, Dark Seas Games is utilizing Kickstarter in an attempt to not only fund “Road Redemption,” but to also receive commentary from fans and gamers.
“As an indie developer, Kickstarter allows us to fund the development of the game without dependencies on major publishers,” said Claire Fontenot, brand manager for Pixel Dash Studios.
According to Fontenot, in exchange for their backing, game users will receive a game they actually enjoy playing as a result of their feedback in the development stages.
Like many Kickstarters, incentives are offered for those who pledge a certain amount to the project.
Concept work for “Road Redemption” began in 2009 and the development of the game started more than a year ago. Set in the American Midwest, the player is a recently paroled felon who, after spending time in a federal prison, is working his way up in a motorcycle club. The game is geared toward more experienced gamers.
“We are asking [for] $160,000 from the gaming community in order to make ‘Road Redemption’ the game that hardcore gamers everywhere have been dreaming about since 1999,” said Dark Seas spokesperson Daniel Balazs.
If the game’s funding goal is reached, it will be released for PC, Linux, Mac and Wii U.
If funded, the game is expected to be released in 2014.
