Atkinson Hall’s bathrooms will be renovated this summer and an elevator will be added as well, according to Facility Services Associate Director Sam Territo.
The project is set to be completed before the fall semester, though the elevator may not be finished until September, depending on the contractor, Territo said.
Territo said the project was initiated to get the building up to code with the Americans with Disabilities Act by making the bathrooms handicap-accessible and allowing those who need handicap access to the building to access higher floors through the elevator.
“This is getting underway after three years of planning,” Territo said. “We are keeping in mind not just wheelchair access, but Braille needs and other handicap entrance issues.”
Territo said the project had to wait until summer because the noise associated with the construction would have interfered with lectures, and the bathrooms would be closed, preventing student access.
This is one of many projects Facility Services has or will undergo to improve building safety and handicap access on campus, Territo said.
