Former LSU football player and 1959 Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon is alert and resting after suffering a stroke Tuesday afternoon, his family told LSU.
Cannon, LSU’s only Heisman Trophy winner, was rushed to a Baton Rouge hospital from Angola State Penitentiary at around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. The former All-American and College Football Hall of Famer works as the director of the dental program at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, according to NOLA.com.
In a statement released by LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director Herb Vincent, the school said Cannon will remain in the intensive care unit tonight as doctors conduct tests to determine the extent and severity of the stroke.
Cannon’s family thanked friends and fans for their prayers and concern.
