Due to their major success, I’m sure many of you have heard of the fantastic rock band known as Kings of Leon. This group of Southern rockers formed in Nashville, Tennessee way back in 1999, and they’ve been making great music ever since. I’ve been a Kings of Leon fan for many years, so I was very excited to hear about the release of their new album in late September. Kings of Leon’s sixth studio album, Mechanical Bull, was released in North America on Sep. 24, 2013, via RCA Records. I found that Kings of Leon created a new sound for this album by taking different styles from their previous work and meshing them all together.
There were many tracks on this record that stood out to me, but the one that stood out the most was “Supersoaker.” This is the first track on the album and the first single released from Mechanical Bull. This single was released long before the full album, so it left Kings of Leon fans itching for more after hearing it. This is my favorite song on the album because, in this song, Kings of Leon stays true to their rock n’ roll roots. Majority of the songs on this album are pretty mellow, but “Supersoaker” is one of the few tracks where the band actually cuts loose and isn’t afraid to rock out. Personally, I prefer this style because it is more similar to Kings of Leon’s older music. This song reminds me of their first album, Youth and Young Manhood, that was released 10 years ago. Oh, how I wish we could go back to the good old days.

Another song on Mechanical Bull that caught my attention was the fourth track, “Beautiful War.” Even though this was one of the album’s more mellow tracks, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. To put it simply, the instrumentation, vocals and overall composition of this song is just beautiful. After listening to this song, I can easily say that it is one of my favorite rock n’ roll ballads. I can only imagine how awesome it would be to experience this song in a live setting.
My third favorite song on the album was track 7, “Family Tree.” This track is pretty chill like most of the others on the album, but it’s got a different vibe to it. This song has more of a groovy sound to it than the others. “Family Tree” is the kind of song that makes you want to kick back, grab a beer, and just chill out and listen to the music. I believe that this is the type of song that fans of all music genres will enjoy. My prediction is that “Family Tree” will end up being a new fan favorite.
Those may be my three favorite songs on the album, but overall, I thought that every track was good. In my opinion, Kings of Leon is one of those bands that never really writes a “bad” song. Even though this album was good, I doesn’t come close to any of their older albums. So you shouldn’t go into it thinking that this album is going to their best work, because it isn’t. Personally, my favorite Kings of Leon album is still Youth and Young Manhood. Even though Mechanical Bull may not be as good as their past albums, I still think it’s a solid record that any Kings of Leon fan will enjoy. I’d even recommend it to anyone who loves Southern rock in general. So if Mechanical Bull sounds like your cup of tea, just sit back, listen and enjoy. Thanks for keeping rock n’ roll alive boys.
Well, sort of.
