LSU trounced the Golden Flashes of Kent State 45 to 13, improving its record on the season to 3-0.
The Tigers (3-0 overall, 0-0 SEC) followed a scoreless third quarter by extending their lead early in the fourth with a 12-yard run by junior running back Terrance Magee. Kent State’s (1-2 overall, 0-1 MAC) only points in the second half game on a third quarter field goal.
Many young Tigers saw game action in the fourth quarter, including freshman quarterback Anthony Jennings. During the drive led by Jennings, the Tigers featured the read-option heavily.
The Tigers opened up the game strong, as on the first drive embattled sophomore running back Jeremy Hill ripped off a 58-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 7-0.
The scoring continued for LSU after a Kent State three and out. LSU drove down the field and on third down senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger fired a 21-yard touchdown pass into junior wide receiver Jarvis Landry to extend the lead to 14-0.
The scoring continued for the Tigers as Hill went in from 12 yards out for his second touchdown of the game.
Kent State was able to fight back on the ensuing drive, though. Kent State quarterback Colin Reardon hit wide receiver Josh Boyle for a 25 yard gain, and then was engineered a drive to put the Golden Flashes on LSU’s two yard line. Reardon finished the drive off with a two yard touchdown run making the score 21-7 with the Tigers still leading.
LSU answered on the following drive with a monster 52-yard reception from senior fullback Connor Neighbors. The Tigers were stopped inside the redzone though, and were forced to settle for the Colby Delahoussaye field goal.
The Tigers kept the blowout rolling after yet another Kent State failed drive. Mettenberger drove the Tigers down the field then hit Landry for another touchdown pass. Following the Delahoussaye extra point, the Tigers were firmly in control, 31-7.
Freshman Travin Dural had a mishap late in the first half, as he muffed a punt to give Kent State great field position. Kent State wasn’t able to punch the ball into the end zone, but they did get a 37-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Anthony Melchiori.
