The LSU men’s swimming and diving team (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) was victorious at Southern Methodist University on Saturday, defeating the Mustangs 161-139.
The Tigers kept the positive momentum going fresh off a victory over SEC foe Kentucky in their last event.
“We knew it’d be a pretty good match,” said LSU swimming coach Dave Geyer.
Each team won eight events. Despite the matches being split evenly, the Tigers were able to show off their depth by scoring more points in the events they won.
“It was a good event and every single person that competed had an opportunity to score,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer.
LSU recovered after failing to score in the 400-yard medley relay and managed to sweep the 100-yard freestyle.
Senior Craig Hamilton’s time of 9:31.16 was the quickest of the bunch and good for first place. Sophomore Mathew Shaefer finished second with a time of 9:43.88 followed by Shane Coltharp who completed the 1-2-3 finish for the Tigers.
Geyer cited the Tigers’ resilience as a key ingredient to the strong showing.
“Anytime we weren’t able to win an event, we responded well,” he said.
After dropping the 200-yard freestyle, LSU regained control by cranking out three straight victories in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breast stroke and 200-yard butterfly. The Tigers rallied to win four of the last six events at the meet and clinch the victory.
The Tigers will visit Southeastern Conference opponent Texas A&M on Saturday, Jan. 19.
