The LSU football team is headed down under for bowl season this year.
The Tigers will travel to Tamp Bay, Fla., this holiday season, where they’ll face Iowa in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, LSU coach Les Miles announced on Sunday night.
“I can tell you [the team] will be as excited as can be,” Miles said. “they recognize that our opponent would be Iowa and that Iowa finished the season with [eight] victories and played everybody on their schedule extremely well and we’ll have to play well in that game to have a victory.”
This will be LSU’s [9-3] first trip to Tampa since 1988 when the Tigers fell to Syracuse 23-10 in the Hall of Fame Bowl — Outback acquired title sponsor rights in 1995.
The game also marks just the second time LSU has met with Iowa [8-4] in post-season play, losing to the Hawkeyes in the 2005 Capital One Bowl during former LSU coach Nick Saban’s final season in Baton Rouge.
Iowa finished second in the Legends Division of the Big Ten conference this season after taking down Michigan and Nebraska in the last few weeks of the season.
The Outback Bowl is set to payout $7.4 million to be split between both teams.
