Google woke up Monday and decided to take the tech world by storm, so it’ll take up the majority of today’s post.
1. Google details a wearable people would use
My readers are probably familiar with my opinion on smart watches — namely, Samsung’s line of Galaxy Gear devices.
It’s not positive. They’re ugly, complicated and require tethering to a Samsung Galaxy phone to be used. In other words, the opposite of what watches are supposed to be: quick access to useful information, like the time.
Google, on the other hand, seems to realize what smart watches could be. Monday, the company announced Android Wear, a version of its popular OS specifically designed for watches.
It’s more or less a specialized version of Google Now. The same colorful cards appear based on your search history, location and preferences and can be swiped away whenever you’re done with them.
Users can also search, respond to text messages and I.D. songs through the device.
Yeah, it still looks silly talking to your wrist or holding your hand up to see what song is playing. But the actually good thing about Android Wear is that it does this all for you, without any prompts, button presses or required tethered connection to Samsung devices (that we know of).
But most importantly, the two devices shown in the above video are actually attractive.
2. LG, Motorola will have some of the first devices
And boy, are they pretty. I mean just look at this.
It looks like a watch, right? Just a normal watch. With a screen instead of a dial. It should be that simple.
Anyway, Motorola’s circular-faced Moto 360 is looks better than LG’s square variety in my book, and that’s for one reason only — it looks like a watch.
According to The Verge, Motorola went through several variations of a square or rectangular-faced watch with a consistent “meh” reaction across the board.
Then, it decided to just make a watch.
“We came to the realization that if we’re going to do this, we need to really embrace what this space is all about,” said Motorola Design Chief Jim Wicks.
And honestly, that’s all that needed to be done to make an appealing smart watch, other than a reasonable price (Looking at you, Samsung). Make it attractive, make it easy and make it affordable.
I’m not saying I’m suddenly on the smart watch train. The phone in my pocket can still do everything and more than any smart watch currently. I don’t see the need for one.
But Google is making a strong argument.
