GAME ONE: Vanderbilt 5, LSU 3
After taking the first game of the series against Vanderbilt with a combination of junior ace Aaron Nola and a late spark by the LSU (17-4, 1-2 Southeastern Conference) offense, the Tigers sent junior left hander Kyle Bouman to the mound for his first taste of SEC play.
It was a rough conference debut for the junior college transfer in a 5-3 Commodore victory.
Before the first inning came to a close, Bouman had already tossed 41 pitches, surrendering three runs on three hits.
Bouman recovered to toss three more clean innings, walking two and striking out one on 73 pitches.
Meanwhile, Vanderbilt junior southpaw Jared Miller held down the LSU offense, tossing 6 2/3 innings of one-run baseball.
The Tigers mustered only four hits in the contest, including one by sophomore center fielder Andrew Stevenson to extend his hitting 17 games.
LSU freshman reliever Alden Cartwright apparently received treatment for an arm injury following his one-inning outing, though it was reported that LSU coach Paul Mainieri said Cartwright’s injury was not serious.
GAME TWO: Vanderbilt 9, LSU 3
Like Bouman, LSU freshman starter Jared Poche’ also got his first taste of SEC play on Saturday in Game Two of the doubleheader.
Poche’ suffered a similar fate in Nashville, Tenn., in a 9-3 loss to Vanderbilt.
The Tigers’ southpaw tossed 4 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked five Commodore hitters on 72 pitches.
Offensively, both senior left fielder Sean McMullen and junior second baseman Conner Hale had multiple hits, while freshman right fielder Mark Laird, sophomore catcher Chris Chinea and Stevenson collected RBIs.
That would be all the Tigers had to show for at the plate – LSU totaled only five hits in the contest. Stevenson’s hitting streak ended at 17 games.
Vanderbilt broke the contest open after LSU senior reliever Kurt McCune took the mound. McCune allowed four runs on four hits in an inning of work. Junior southpaw Cody Glenn had an equally rough outing, allowing two hits and one run, including walking a batter with the bases loaded.
