The Muslim Student Association celebrated World Hijab Day for the first time on campus Friday by putting the traditional female headdress, the hijab, on willing passers-by in Free Speech Plaza.
The main goal of the event was to educate University students about the history and representation of the hijab among Muslim women, said Mariam Khan, social committee chair for MSA.
“I feel like a lot of times people see the hijab and give me more space or respect, but at the same time some people get the wrong connotation,” Khan said. “[We] are trying to expand MSA to get the word out.”
While the focus of the event was around the hijab, part of the tabling included trying on turbans, the traditional male headdress, Khan said.
