Grade: A-
There are no contradictions within Schoolboy Q’s debut album, “Oxymoron.” The album is vulgar, aggressive and entertaining in a manner that only Schoolboy Q can deliver. Songs such as “Studio” and “Grooveline Pt. 2” are the California native’s rough attempts at love songs. The album focuses on the topics that Q knows best, such as gangbanging and drugs. Schoolboy Q does not try to be a deep lyricist on “Oxymoron,” and by doing so, he clearly tells the story of his life. He is confident about the direction of his music, which is made evident in songs like “Man of the Year” and “Prescription/Oxymoron.” “Oxymoron” should not be compared to label mate Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City.” Q is an individual with a different style of music. The record is solid from start to finish with tracks inspired by West Coast flair that will remind listeners of Snoop Dogg’s “Doggystyle.”
