The modern college female slays the distressed damsel ideology of yesteryear, but with knights behaving not so chivalrously, I encourage the ladies to practice a few chivalrous traits to strengthen their position.
On the subject of outward politeness, I understand fashion trends come and go. The proper dress of Victorian women consisted of five layers. Women shed the uncomfortable clothing for short skirts and trousers in the 1920s.
If a fellow at a bar insists on buying you drinks all night, don’t let him. Oftentimes, there are wrongful expectations. Allow him to buy you dinner instead. A true gentleman will not de- cline the proposition, and it will spare the need for Gatorade and Aspirin in the morning.
Meaning that you should. If you make an effort to avoid dirty words in your everyday conversation, you won’t have to worry about letting the F-word slip with someone on a polite level.
It comes to the college male population in bars. Make smart and safe choices.
The world has changed as gender roles have shifted from what they were in the past. This is magnificent. However, with all this progress, some of these potential ladies are behaving like girls.
Today, a college female is free to attend class in the most comfortable clothing thus far, such as athletic shorts and a tank top. However, this apparel is only appropriate for the UREC and physical courses.
Most importantly, an independent, respectable and kind female is an ideal to aspire to, just as the knights of old aspired to the highest levels of chivalry. This description isn’t the old “Suzy Homemaker” notion, but that of the kind of woman with a good heart.
It’s the choices that create the women. Some choices appear insignificant and others are big decisions from the start. Both of these have consequences.
A professor dresses appropriately for instructing students. Therefore, it’s our responsibility to be courteous and dress respectably as students. A night in Tigerland shouldn’t be the only time to spruce up one’s wardrobe. The chances of meeting a possible important net- work aren’t at a college bar, but more likely while being attentive in class and around campus.
It’s these chivalrous traits and com- mon sense that construct a determined woman, and I have yet to meet a University woman who does not aspire to the highest character traits of humankind. I just wish I could see more on the surface.
Opinion: Common sense constructs a determined woman
