Students looking to fit in late-night study time can no longer do so at Middleton Library. The library’s 24/5 hours are temporarily suspended, according to LSU Libraries’ website.
The post states the 24-hour library schedule was temporarily canceled because the library’s security company has been suspended from working at the University.
Director of Library Communications and Publications Sigrid Kelsey said she learned that until the security company became “compliant,” the company could not continue to work for the University.
“From what I understand, LSU told us that effective immediately, this company was longer allowed to work for LSU until they became compliant, and compliant with what, I’m not sure,” Kelsey said. “There must be some sort of state guidelines.”
Night circulation supervisor Jeremy Fontenot said the cancellation is not the responsibility of the University, but of the security company.
Sunday was the first day the old hours were placed back into effect, Fontenot said.
The library should go back to its 24/5 schedule after finding a resolution or a new security company, Kelsey said, calling it a top priority.
Although Kelsey said she is unfamiliar with the process of hiring a new company, she said she hopes to get extended hours back by next week.
Research and instruction librarian Paul Hrycaj reaffirmed that the issue is only temporary.
“This looks like just a temporary bump in the road,” Hrycaj said. “As soon as they get this straightened out, they’ll get extended hours back into place.”
The extended library hours were part of Student Government President Clay Tufts’ campaign initiatives and came to fruition earlier this semester.
Tufts saw a sign about the time changes early Sunday morning and confirmed the library is looking to solve the problem.
