Success in college begins with a healthy lifestyle.
During college, many students find it difficult to eat healthy because of how easy it is to pick up fast food.
The concern for most college students is the prices on organic fruits and vegetables. Kelsey Farnet, LSU student and Event Coordinator for on-campus health club called CHAARG, gave a few tips on how to save money while shopping for healthy food.
“Foods with a hard outer shell, for example lemons or oranges…those kinds of things, definitely not necessary to buy organic, so you can save your money. Buy the cheaper versions of that,” Farnet said. “With the easily contaminated with pesticides, like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, you would want to buy the organic.”
This month is also National Farm to School Month. This means that elementary students in Baton Rouge have the opportunity to visit mobile and shop at farmers markets, meet the farmers, and taste their products.
“When we transport most of our food from out of the country, it had to be picked much earlier than when it was ready, it sits in storage and then it is transported,” said Lyndsi Lambert, Grants Coordinator for Fresh Beginnings and Farm for School. “So you could be eating food that was picked two weeks or more prior to when you eat it.”
However, at farmers markets like the ones in Baton Rouge, the produce was picked no more than 48 hours before you purchase it.
The LSU dietetics students mad food and give the elementary students tips on how to cook the food they bought at the farmers market.
“It’s important to eat fruits and vegetable because they have nutrients that our bodies need that you may not be able to get from pizza or chips,” LSU dietetic student Brittney Olivier said.
The solution to eating healthy does not mean that everyone needs to follow the same food plan, because each person’s body reacts to food in different ways.
”It’s not about following a specific diet,” said Morgan Simpson, LSU student and CHAARG president. “It’s about fueling your body like your way.”
By buying your fruits and vegetable at a healthy food store or your local farmers market you are helping yourself live a healthy lifestyle and Louisiana’s economy.
