Good sound can soothe the soul. Friday night at Spanish moon was an unexpected night of fun beats that was both the perfect end to the week and a precursor for rowdy Saturday game day. Though it was a light crowd for a Friday night, Pacifico started the evening with a mix of fun alternative and pop indie sounds. Having to replace their Bassist last minute for the show last night, they group pulled together of a very solid set that fans of Weezer and Ocean Avenue would enjoy. The crowd definitely had their feet taping and it was a good transition to the next band.
Taking the stage second was Coin from Nashville, Tennessee, and the crowd couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised. With high energy and a sound that could be neighborly with Vampire Weekend, the group had the crowd dancing on the first song. Lead vocalist, Chase Lawrence kept apologizing for technical difficulties, but the way the crowd was bouncing there didn’t look like there were any unhappy faces. Overall, the crowd was super pumped from Coin’s happy tunes and strong beats leaving the us perfectly energized to welcome on the Kopecky Family Band.
A family, but not in the traditional sense, took the stage at Spanish Moon to a half full, but extremely attentive crowd. Composed of Kelsey Kopecky, Gabe Simon, Steven Holmes, David Krohn, Markus Midkiff, and Corey Oxendine, the band hails from Nashville, Tennessee bringing a fun American-Indie-Rock sound. Pulling out a medley of instruments, tambourines, Trombones, whistling, an xylophone, and a ukulele in addition to the standard drum and guitar set the group even had the crowd helping make the music too. For a small turnout there was fullness to the fun with the crowd dancing and clapping and even whistling along to the songs. If one could imagine and upbeat Angus & Julia Stone, they wouldn’t be far off from imagining Kopecky’s performance. However, founders, vocalist Kelsey and Gabe Simon slowed it down with a track about love and finding “Hope at the end of the tunnel, and hoping there’s hope”. It got a bit heavier and the crowd was completely drawn in. The pace picked back up when the band introduced us to a taste of some new tunes off of an album, Kids Raising Kids, that’s been in the recent works. At one point a trombone solo from atop the bar had the crowd completely enraptured. Performing two songs for their encore, the Kopecky Family Band’s first appearance in Louisiana left us with an amazing first impression and with an invitation to come back anytime for another show!
