“Clueless” has to be one of my all-time favorite movies. This movie was “Mean Girls” before Regina George and Cady Heron even existed.
The main character, Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone considered herself high school’s queen. She knew all the rules; dating, dressing, behaving, Horowitz had it down to a science.
Above all, her closet was her pride and joy. The woman spends almost the entire movie deciding which outfit is right for each occasion and consistently shopping to keep her ensembles fresh.
Horowitz’s outfits are very ‘90s, but they’re very easy to adapt into today’s wardrobe.
Her look through the movie is primarily a fashionable school girl one.

She loved using blouses, socks, skirts and dresses to create an outfit that had the feel of a modified school uniform. Her outfits were fun, but also professional, so she could go from school to helping her father on his law cases.
One pattern consistently repeated throughout Horowitz’s clothing in the movie is plaid. Specifically in jackets and in skirts.

Plaid is a tricky pattern to style, but the best way to do it is with neutrals and in small doses. Pick one item of your outfit to be in this pattern and then keep everything else simple. One current way to do this is with flannel shirts. Pair a plaid flannel shirt with jeans or leggings and a simple t-shirt or tank top underneath. Shoes can be done with flats, Converse or boots.
However, if you want more of a Horowitz look, go for a plaid skirt. The skirt can be dressed down with a simple t-shirt, or can be dressed up with a sweater or button-up blouse.
You can really channel Horowitz by finishing the look with knee-high socks and flats, or you can change it up with tights. If tights or socks aren’t your style, simply use flats or boots by themselves for a simplified, but put together look.
But the most important accessory when channeling Horowitz is confidence. As the movie progresses, Horowitz realizes she’s not as much of an expert on everything as she thought she was. However, she continues to handle herself with grace.
That’s the best part about Horowitz and the best style advice she could give: own who you are and don’t apologize for being yourself.
