Grade: A
Spike Jonze’s work has always been hit or miss, but it’s easy to appreciate how he re-imagines the world. “Her” will blow moviegoers away with how it presents itself as a unified artistic whole. Everything from Joaquin Phoenix’s incredible performance, the unique costumes and Arcade Fire’s melancholy and pondering score lends itself to the film’s overall message. This movie is easily one of the most well-written movies of the year, “Her” manages to feel genuine and distinct without being cheesy or pretentious. The film asks watchers to reevaluate their understanding of love in an age when technology is rapidly changing every other aspect of society. Why does love mean the same thing to us now that it did one hundred years ago? “Her” avoids many of the clichés that one could so readily associate with the film’s premise and tells a beautiful tale of love in the digital age.
